PMS Symptoms

PMS is a group of symptoms related to the menstrual cycle. It doesn’t affect all females. Breast tenderness and bloating are the most common symptoms of PMS. Symptoms appear 7-10 days before your monthly bleeding begins and go away after your period. The bad news is that you have to wait until your monthly periods stop (menopause), to say goodbye to PMS. The good news is that there are some things you can do to help manage any PMS symptoms:

  • Get more exercise. Special chemicals in the brain are responsible for increasing pleasure and decreasing pain. These chemicals are called endorphins, and exercise helps increase them.
  • Eat less sugar and caffeine.
  • Eat less salt. If you're careful not to eat too much salt, you can help decrease water retention (bloating).
  • Relieve aches and pains with over-the-counter pills.

If you have bad PMS symptoms—especially depression or anxiety—you should see your gynecologist. Treatments are available to treat severe PMS symptoms.
